The Castle
A visit to Cardigan Castle walks you through 900 years of continuous human history – from the early eleven hundreds right through to the present day.
The initial Cardigan Castle was a wooden Norman fortress built in the early medieval period, this was superceded by the Castle we know today which is built in stone by Lord Rhys – the first stone castle built by a Welshman. It was completed in 1176. Over the centuries The Castle has been the site of bloody battles, with invasions from English, Welsh and Viking armies.
Whilst the first part of its life was as a secure fortress from which to govern, from the late 1700s it has served as an elegant private home with the building of Georgian residence Castle Green House.
Cardigan Castle is a place where you can find more than a sweeping overview of centuries of predictable history. It’s somewhere to discover the stories of key historic moments and people – be it Lord Rhys, Owain Glyndwr, or Katherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII – along with quirky links to the unexpected.
It was a place where bowls were played on the lawns.
It was a place which had a Pineapple house.
Cardigan Castle also has a unique place in Welsh cultural history as the home of the first ever Eisteddfod in 1176. The Eisteddfod was held on Christmas day in 1176 by Lord Rhys to celebrate the completion of its building.
